Truss Estimator — Frequently Asked Questions
Everything about planning an F34 aluminum truss build and getting an instant parts estimate.
What is the Truss City Truss Estimator?+
The Truss Estimator is a free online tool that helps you plan an F34 aluminum truss structure. You choose a shape (single span, goal post, rectangle frame, or box/cube), enter your dimensions, and it instantly generates a complete parts list with pricing. When you are happy with the design you can send the configuration to our team for a personalized quote.
How does the truss estimator work?+
Pick a structure shape, enter the width, depth, and height you need (in feet or meters), and optionally add extra cross spans, support legs, or base plates. The estimator calculates how many truss sections, 6-way corner blocks, connectors, and plates are required, snaps every run to buildable whole-metre lengths, and shows a live bill of materials with per-part and total prices.
What truss shapes can I design with the estimator?+
You can design four common structures: a single horizontal span, a goal post (two uprights with a top beam, ideal for backdrops and finish lines), a rectangle ground-support frame, and a box/cube — a rectangular top frame standing on four legs. Each shape lets you add extra cross spans or support legs where relevant.
Can I enter dimensions in feet or meters?+
Yes. The estimator has a feet/meters toggle. You can plan in whichever unit you prefer and the on-screen dimensions and layout diagram update to match. Internally the build is calculated in metres because our truss is stocked in metric lengths, so measurements are snapped to the nearest buildable whole-metre run.
Why does the estimator only use 1m and 2m truss lengths?+
Truss City stocks straight F34 truss in 1-metre and 2-metre sections only. The estimator builds every run from those two lengths so the parts list reflects exactly what we can supply. This is why dimensions are snapped to whole metres — it guarantees the design can actually be built from in-stock parts without custom-cut pieces.
What is the difference between rigid and flexible build modes?+
Rigid mode uses the fewest joints, favouring 2-metre sections for the strongest, cleanest runs. Flexible mode keeps the same mostly-2m structure but swaps one 2m section for two 1m sections on each run, giving you a couple of shorter pieces per span for easier on-site length adjustment.
Does the estimated price include everything?+
The estimate covers the truss parts (sections, corner blocks, connectors, and any base plates you select). It does not automatically include delivery, rigging hardware, or applicable tax. Those are confirmed on your personalized quote after you submit the configuration.
Is the estimate a final quote?+
No — it is an instant parts-and-price estimate to help you plan. When you submit your configuration we prepare a personalized quote, confirm current stock, and add any delivery or extra hardware. Our team usually follows up within 1–2 business days.
What are base plates and when do I need them?+
Base plates are the flat feet that a truss leg stands on to spread the load and keep the structure stable on the ground. The estimator adds one base plate per leg when you enable them, and you can choose 600×600mm or 800×800mm plates depending on how much stability your structure needs.
What are 6-way blocks and connectors?+
A 6-way block is a cube-shaped junction that lets truss meet from multiple directions — used at corners and where legs meet a top frame. Connectors join straight truss sections end to end. The estimator counts these automatically based on the shape and any extra spans or legs you add.
What material is the truss made from?+
All Truss City truss is F34 (290mm × 290mm) box truss made from 6061-T6 aluminium alloy, with 50×2mm main tubes and 25×2mm bracing. It uses the industry-standard conical (CCS) connection system, which is compatible with other major F34 brands.
Is the F34 truss compatible with other brands?+
Yes. Our F34 series uses the standard 290mm × 290mm profile with conical connection fittings, so it is compatible with other major manufacturers that use the same F34 standard, including Global Truss and similar brands.
How much weight can an F34 truss span hold?+
Load capacity depends on the span length, how the load is applied, and your safety and deflection requirements, so it must be confirmed for your specific setup. As a general reference, published F34 load tables show center-point capacity dropping as span grows. For any rigging or load-bearing application, tell us your span and load and we will advise on supports — always have load-bearing rigging reviewed by a qualified person.
Can I get a truss shape that is not in the estimator?+
Absolutely. The estimator covers the most common structures, but we build custom configurations too. Enter the closest shape, add a note describing what you need, and submit it — or contact us directly and we will design a custom truss layout and quote for your project.
Do I need an account to use the truss estimator?+
No account or signup is required. The estimator is completely free to use. You only provide your contact details at the end if you want us to turn your design into a personalized quote.
Can I download or share my truss design?+
Yes. The estimator draws a labelled layout diagram of your structure that you can download as an image. When you submit your configuration for a quote, that diagram and the full parts list are attached automatically so our team sees exactly what you designed.
